Internal Affairs & Discipline, Gualberto Garcia, Supt. PDF Print E-mail
The Internal Affairs & Discipline (IAD) unit serves the public and the police on internal matters concerning the conduct of police officers. IAD meets with the public and obtains a written complaint. Then an internal investigation is carried out by appointed officials. If the investigation reveals that the police officer is guilty of an unlawful act, one of the following is conducted

A) A tribunal is held internally, the police department arranges for defense attorneys (court police) to advocate for the defendant and/or the accuser in the case, and the charges are made according to the laws of Belize.

B) The offense is put on trial in a court of Law.

The difference between the tribunal and the court of Law is that when a case is dealt with internally, a police officer can be charged twice for the same offense and there is no court fee. In the event that the case should go to the court, the unit provides financial support to the police who within the line of duty committed a fault that would qualify him for support of the department. This support comes from the police officers who donate salary payments to the Legal Defense Fund.

Aside from being reactive, the IAD is also proactive. The unit conducts lectures for customer care as they lease with the Commander, Ombudsman, and the Human Right Commissioner. Furthermore, the police arrange meetings and trainings conducted by NGOs and other helpful institutions.
